Origin
Music and Poetry
2026

I wrote this poem in 1998. The premise was completely Dadaesque at the time, as I wrote a list of words I retrieved from a section of the Sunday paper; I closed my eyes, turned a page, and put my finger down. Where my finger stopped was the word I wrote. I constructed this out of that list of words, with no intention of it ever meaning anything. But it did end up meaning something and remains one my personal favorites.

The music was an accident. I just randomly started playing around on the keyboard and I put together a few tracks that had some melody and a hint of underlying discordance, like a wall of ethereal sound. I tried adding some vocal tracks but I wasn’t happy with any of them and tossed them. Then, Origin came to mind and I decided to recite my poem to the music and it worked. I was happy with the combination. The video was shot outside the other evening, just before dusk, and I thought it would be a nice accompaniment.

This is best listened to with headphones.

What is ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) music? To me, ASMR music is almost hypnotic sound that gets inside your head - soft, dreamy sounds that can make you feel relaxed, tingly, or completely absorbed in the moment. It’s not really music you just listen to…it’s music you feel.

ORIGIN:

Life has not been kind
as much as I remember it.
This was the scene:
the undergrowth, the creek, corpses
smelling deliciously of progress
We explore, break free
swinging wildly from a saga
We are the only people here
and we don’t obey the rules
Water strummed the ground—a thunderstorm
The rain gently dabbled
where the earth, indeed, a fire as hell.
A flame sputters
I sip a cup of tea
I don’t care today—I just sit here in the sunshine
We eat, we drink, we bark like beasts
A side effect of the first born.
Nothing much has changed in twenty years.
Nothing much has changed since the origin.
