Mary to the World
Mary does wonders for many people. She travels around the world spreading love and joy to those in need. The thing that many people don't know about Mary is that she looks different to everyone. When you look closely at Mary, you see what you need to see - she has that power. And while you may ask the person next to you what she or he sees, there will always be something different than the visage before you. It's an amazing talent and one that serves such a great purpose because all of our needs are so diverse. Mary to the world!
This piece was created using an old papier mache doll head which was sanded and repainted, a wooden candlestick, a vintage brass drawer pull, a very old rusty piece of metal shaped like a stem with leaves, a 4 x 4 wood block, a silk flower, a single turquoise & sterling silver earring (the only one remaining from a pair I got from my dad when I was just 8), a rusty filigreed heart, wire, fibers and tulle, a rusty metal crown, rubber stamps, image transfer & more.
Mary's body was created using a thick layer of gesso which I imprinted with stamped images and left to dry. I let paint seep into the crevices that gave it an aged appearance.
There is an image transfer on her heart that says Mary, one on her body that says "to the world" and on the base, which has been painted to give a verdigris effect, it says, "Mary will work such wonders."
